The Life-Saving Potential of Your Baby's Cord Blood

Do we or don't we bank our baby's umbilical cord blood. It's a
decision many new parents are struggling with. Under siege
from advertisers in parenting magazines, many feel guilty if
they don't save this "insurance policy for their baby's
health" in a private storage bank.

But private banking has not been shown to be a necessity at
this time, except in those cases when a closely related family
member needs a transplant of the stem cells harvested from
cord blood. When there is no need of this kind, cord blood
storage is a speculative undertaking.

In fact, it's not
recommended by very many physicians and medical organizations.

However, public donation of cord blood is. Making this
valuable asset available through public cord blood storage
facilities is encouraged by groups such as the American
Academy of Pediatrics. It can provide life saving stem cells
in the treatment of many devastating illnesses, providing hope
for those with no matching family member donor. It's also a
source for those with no suitable match in the bone marrow
registries where these stem cells are traditionally acquired.

Public cord blood banks process (collect, test, and store) all
cord blood that is donated, and provide it to anyone who
needs
it: those with life threatening illnesses that need
hematopoietic (blood) stem cell transplants from unrelated
donors.

These stem cells were traditionally derived from bone marrow
donation but many patients can't find a bone marrow donor who

is a close enough match for their tissue type. And some run
out of time because their disease progresses too rapidly. The

new (and some say better) option is cord blood.
With adequate
public cord blood donation, nearly everyone who needs a stem
cell transplant can get one when they need it.

Cord blood is one of the most promising areas of medical
research currently being pursued.
The stem cells harvested
from what used to be medical waste (umbilical cord blood) can

be used in an increasing number of serious and
life-threatening illnesses.

Even more promising are the possibilities for the future that

researchers are just now beginning to scratch the surface of.

One thing standing in the way of both the ability to treat all
patients who need it and research is a lack of inventory.
More
donations to the public store of cord blood units are
needed so that treatment and research can continue and
increase.

The Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act was passed into law
in response to this need, in order to establish a national
resource for cord blood stem cells. This will help to create
the 150,000-unit inventory needed to treat the tens of
thousands who need transplants and for continued research. It

will facilitate the collection and storage of umbilical cord
blood by public cord blood stem cell banks. It's important
to continue to increase donations so that everyone who might
need cord blood can get the best possible match. Larger
reserves make it more likely stem cells will be
available for
all who need them.

Efforts are underway to encourage the increasing of
inventories as well as increasing the number of storage
facilities in operation. Those who add their baby's cord blood
to this store are making a very real contribution to the
world's present and future health and well being. .

International Travel Health Insurance

With the world becoming one global village, international travel becomes almost as trivial as going to the supermarket. But the difference is that if you have health insurance and break your leg while going to the supermarket, you will not have to pay the medical expenses for treatment.

But when you are abroad and get injured or sick, the worst that you can think of is not having valid health insurance. If this is the case, prepare to pay for your carelessness because the domestic health care system does not include treatment abroad.

Being abroad and relying on American consular officers to get you out of trouble when you are injured or sick is pointless, because their duties include assisting you with getting to a hospital and informing your friends and family, but in no case are they supposed to assist you with paying for treatment.

There are many companies that offer international travel health insurance. You can contact any of them...

Understanding Real Estate Terminology

Purchasing a home can be a complicated and confusing process, especially for first-time buyers.
Throughout the process, first-time home buyers will encounter a variety of unfamiliar real state terms. There are several key terms associates with purchasing real estate that are helpful to learn. For example, many buyers confuse the terms broker and salesperson.
A broker is a properly licensed individual, or corporation, who serves as a special agent in the purchase and sale of real estate, a salesperson is an individual employed or associated by written agreement by the broker as an independent contractor.
The salesperson facilitates the purchase or sale of real estate.Once you decide to purchase, a salesperson will prepare a sales contract to present to the seller along with your earnest money deposit.

The sales contract is the document through which the seller agrees to give possession and title of property to the buyer upon full payment of the purchase...

Does Work/Life Balance Really Exist?

Copyright 2006 Donna Gunter

If you look at almost any issue of nationally published women's magazines, you'll find article upon article trying to convince the American public (and American women) that you can have it all -- a brilliant career/business and a marvelous family life -- and then follow with instructions on how you can accomplish this easily.

I am just not buying into this train of thought.
In order for most successful business people to get where they want to be in their businesses, something has to go.
For me, it's been a personal life.
As a single woman of 40 with no children and no significant other on the horizon, I've got much more flexibility than most.
I can make a conscious decision to forego some aspect of my life on a shorter-term basis to reach my goals.

Most of us aren't quite that lucky, however.
You have children you have to get dressed and to school each day, or a spouse who needs...

Insurance, Fear Of The Unknown

Copyright 2006 Karl Stadler

Now why in the world do we need insurance?

Back in the good old days when the earth was still flat and we were all living in the same time zone you would have had little knowledge of insurance except for maybe leaving something as insurance for a loan you made.
There is nothing wrong with the concept of insurance, it most certainly has its value in the bigger picture of things.

What is wrong is the way in which many people are bulldozed into signing for insurance policies that they don't really need or which will not be able to tend their needs once they need it.

As there are many first-class insurance companies out there, there are also the few that are just out to make a quick buck from you creating never ending problems.

Many people spend a large portion of their income on insurance, health, car, household and life to name but a few. There are many others policies that the insurance...
